While experts cite a host of reasons for the upsurge, they agree on one thing: the bugs, which were mostly eradicated in this country at mid-century by now-banned pesticides like DDT but remained a constant scourge overseas, are finding their way back to the United States through an increase in global travel.
And in cities like New York, where neighbors are often separated only by bricks and mortar, one person’s infestation is everybody’s problem, since bedbugs can crawl through walls and along wiring and pipes, and hitchhike on clothing, furniture, luggage and more. In this city of 8.3 million, it seems as if everyone has a bedbug story.

The massive rise in cheap, international travel. It's no coincidence the bed bug increase happened at the same time as China's rise in prominence.

friend of mine moved cross country. shipped their beds. wrapped in plastic, but apparently, not good enough. when it came off the moving truck, they had bed bugs. it was hell on earth to deal with it, and I think the solution was eventually to abandon the apartment that they were renting, lose all of their cloth goods, mattresses, couches, that sort of shit and move elsewher.

This has been going on for years and is a nasty secret about living in NYC. Hotels and apartments are infested and it's virtually impossible to eradicate the things.
